Stress Might Be the Silent Killer

,

Stress is part of daily life, sometimes you feel it more than other days. It could be work, college or just the daily tasks of life that make you feel anxious, exhausted and getting so worried that you end up with a terrible headache. Stress can also be a factor to your hair loss, as there has been a link to stress causing a disruption in the natural growth cycle of hair follicles

If you don’t already know, there are four phases of the natural growth cycle. The first phase is the Anagen Phase; the growing phase of the hair that normally lasts up to seven years. Second comes the Catagen Phase, the transitional phase lasting around 10 days, when the follicle decreases in size and detaches from the dermal papilla. The Telogen Phase comes next, when 10-15% of your hair remains in the resting phase for roughly 3 months. During this phase, while your old hair is resting, new hair beings its Anagen Phase. Finally comes the Exogen, shedding, phase where the old hair detaches and shed, while the new hair continues to grow.

Now don’t freak out if you see hair falling out while you shower, because it is totally normal to see about 100 hairs fall out daily. That’s normal. But when you are stressed out or experiencing some king of trauma (for example childbirth for woman) you can affect the growth cycle of your hair and push it into the resting phase; Telogen Phase.

There is a special term for this kind of condition, Telogen Effluvium. This is basically a fancy term given to the condition of an excess of hair falling out of your scalp. This seems to be very noticeable when you wash your hair. But don’t be scared, you won’t start noticing sudden bald patches in your head, rather you will notice areas of extreme thinning and hair loss. The effects are not instant, it takes about 1-3 months after major stress, to experience the sudden hair loss/thinning.

Now how can this be cured? Will my hair ever come back? Well don’t worry, the treatment for Telogen Effluvium is very easy. You don’t need to do ANYTHING! This is because no actual treatment is available or Is even required for most cases. Usually after you stressful or traumatic event has passed, then your hair will resume in its normal cycle and be back to that nice, think hair you remember.

If you feel like your stress levels are normal, but you are still noticing abnormal thinning or hair loss, then there maybe other reasons such as your diet, that might be causing it.
