Millennials Experiencing Hair Loss

,

Millennials are noticing significant signs of hair loss. With multiple contributing factors such as diet, medication and emotional stress, balding is become more common at younger ages.

According to Dermatologist Candace Thornton-Spann, there are many known causes of hair loss such as hormonal changes, thyroid disorders and stress. What you eat and don’t eat can be a huge issue as well. Since Hair is made up of protein, Dr. Spann notices that people who completely stop eating meat stop receiving the adequate amount of protein in their diet, so it makes complete sense that people stop growing adequate hair.

Besides a change in your diet, emotional conditions like stress can affect the growth cyle of your hair. If you don’t already know, the hair follicle as four main phases of growth. These phases are called the Anagen (growth phase), Catagen (Regression Phase), Telogen (resting phase) and finally Exogen (Shedding phase).

With stress, the growth cycle of hair can be manipulated into the difference stages. A common form of hair loss due to stress, more common among women, is called Telogen Effluvium. With telogen effluvium, thinning and shedding of the hair is caused by the shift of a group of hair into the Telogen phase (resting phase). When this happens, it means that fewer hair follicles are able to grow in the Anagen phase because they remain In the Telogen phase. This slows down the hair growth cycle and overall results in gradual thinning and shedding of the hair.

With the age of technology and social media, the younger generation has become more aware of their hair conditions. Scrolling through Instagram and Facebook, the younger audience gets constantly exposed to thick, long hair and this creates a greater desire to have it. It’s only natural as humans to want what we don’t have.
